Cambridge United have begun exploring a potential move from their Abbey Stadium home to a new stadium near the city's airport. The club is working with the Greater Cambridge Development Corporation and site owner Hill Group on feasibility studies for the long-term project, which aims to fuel growth beyond the current ground.

A study is looking into whether land about a mile away could host the new stadium. Peter Freeman of the development corporation said a rough idea of costs and potential income should be clear within six months. He told reporters that in that timeframe they would be able to get a rough enough idea to work out whether it is viable. Any move, if it goes ahead, is not expected for several years, with the club continuing at the Abbey for the best part of the next decade.

Fan sentiment shifts toward acceptance

Longtime supporters express a mix of emotional attachment and pragmatic acceptance of the need for progress. Liam McNally, from Cambridge, has been going to the Abbey since he was a boy but believes his team has outgrown its home. He said that if Cambridge United are to achieve their growth goals, a move away from the Abbey is necessary. He added that any new ground must retain character and atmosphere while offering better transport links and community facilities, avoiding a soulless bowl.

There is a growing sense of optimism around the club's direction, both on and off the pitch. Supporter Anouska Wright said there is a different feel about things now, with a lot more positivity. This mood is bolstered by the team's strong start to the League One season.

Development partners and feasibility studies advance

Work to explore the site's feasibility was due to conclude by Easter. The proposed location is near Cambridge Airport, which is scheduled to close in the future, opening up development opportunities. The club's current form provides a positive backdrop for these ambitious plans. Their last outing was a commanding win over Brighton U21s.

That result followed a mixed run of form in their recent league games. The club will continue advancing stadium relocation discussions while maintaining their competitive push in League One.
