Cambridge United's stadium ambitions are taking shape with plans to explore a new 15,000-seat ground at the Cambridge East site. The club has initiated discussions with developer The Hill Group and the Greater Cambridge Development Corporation to assess the feasibility of a move from the ageing Abbey Stadium.
Chairman Godric Smith confirmed the exploration of a potential new site around a mile from the current ground. "We are collectively looking at a potential new site around a mile away from the Cledara Abbey Stadium," Smith said. The project aims to secure the club's long-term future and act as a catalyst for a new quarter of Cambridge, bringing significant economic and community benefits. The current Abbey Stadium, owned by the club, has been its home since 1932 but presents significant redevelopment challenges, limiting financial growth.
Partnership forms for stadium development
Work to explore the site's viability is due to conclude by Easter 2027, with no commitments yet from any party. The Hill Group, which bought the airport and adjacent land in June, has held positive meetings with majority owner Paul Barry. All parties are working with a shared desire to make the project work, with a masterplan for the entire Cambridge East site expected by the end of next year. The club has paused previous redevelopment plans for the Abbey and will not vacate it until 2029 at the earliest, ensuring continuity for the best part of the next decade.
Fan engagement guides the project
To ensure supporter interests are represented, lifelong fan and season ticket holder Richard Arnold has been appointed as a stadium adviser. Arnold, of Wrenbridge Sport, has experience working on venues built for the 2012 London Olympics. The club pledges to guard its proud heritage and will conduct a full consultation if plans progress, while continuing to invest in improving the current matchday experience at the Abbey.
On-field context
This strategic planning for the future continues as the first team builds its campaign on the pitch. The U's currently sit 8th in the League One standings with 21 points from their opening 14 matches. The side will look to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat at Leyton Orient when they host Shrewsbury Town this Saturday in their next fixture. The club remains committed to developing the stadium plans with its partners while maintaining all current football operations and focusing on the immediate challenge ahead.
