Cambridge United's EFL Trophy win at Gillingham featured a full debut for goalkeeper Gabe Breeze. The U's secured a victory at Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday, extending their unbeaten run to five matches across all competitions.

Goals from Zak Bradshaw, Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, Louis Appere and Isaac Heath sealed the three points in the group stage. Bradshaw opened the scoring, with Mpanzu adding a second. Gillingham's Louie Dayal pulled one back, but Appere restored the two-goal cushion before Heath converted a penalty.

Breeze, the 22-year-old former Carlisle United keeper, was handed his first start after being an unused substitute for the last three League One games. Manager Neil Harris selected a more experienced back line to support the debutant. "Sometimes you need a game like that to get your rhythm, to get your awareness with the centre-halves in front of you," Harris said. He added, "That's why we went with [a more experienced back line], just to give Gabe that support."

The win lifts Cambridge United to fifth place in League One with 12 points from seven games. The result also provides a positive platform ahead of the next League One fixture.

Cambridge United will host AFC Wimbledon at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday, September 26. Wimbledon currently sit seventh in the table, setting up a tight contest between two promotion hopefuls. The full schedule is available on our fixtures list.
