Cambridge United has launched a new logo to celebrate its historic role in shaping the modern game. The logo marks the partnership between the university, Cambridge United, and the city council to promote Cambridge's role in football.
What happened?
The new logo was created by Chris Payne, who also designed the U's new crest last year. It may feature on future merchandising, the club said. The initiative aims to help raise awareness of Cambridge's role in shaping the modern game and support future activity celebrating this shared heritage.
Why it matters for Cambridge United
The logo celebrates the 'Cambridge Rules', a set of 11 rules written by university students in 1848, which were later adopted by the Football Association. In 1863, the Football Association adopted many of these rules, along with others created in Sheffield, to shape the modern game. The partnership between the university and Cambridge United was established three years ago to boost sport and community engagement across Cambridge.
What comes next?
The partnership and new logo were celebrated at an event earlier this month, which saw a match between the university's women and Cambridge United, followed by a dinner at Selwyn College. Godric Smith, director of Cambridge United, said: "We are very pleased that the club, university, and city have all come together to look at how we can do more to mark Cambridge's place in history as the birthplace of modern football." As of 24 Jun 2026, Cambridge United is 3rd in England League Two, with 82 pts, 22W-16D-8L from 46 games, and recent form DWLDW. Their last result was a 0-0 draw against Crewe on 2026-05-02.
