Cambridge United have launched a special fourth shirt for the 2026/27 season, a tribute to Cambridge icon Syd Barrett that will be worn on World Mental Health Day. The club, currently sitting 6th in the standings with 13 points from eight games, will debut the kit in their next home fixture against Blackpool on Saturday 10 October.

The design draws directly from the legacy of Barrett, the pioneering songwriter and founding member of Pink Floyd. Its orange and blue colour palette is a reference to the floorboards on the cover of his 1970 solo album The Madcap Laughs, while the overall concept nods to the Pink Floyd composition Shine On You Crazy Diamond. The project was created in collaboration with the Barrett Estate and produced by technical partners Umbro and Kitlocker.

Mental health initiative

A core part of the launch is a fundraising component for mental health work. A proportion of all replica shirt sales will go towards supporting local mental health initiatives. Also, the match-worn shirts from the Blackpool game will be auctioned, with those proceeds also directed to the cause.

Rosemary Breen, sister of Syd Barrett, expressed her delight at the collaboration. She said the initiative helps highlight World Mental Health Day through her brother's legacy and confirmed she plans to attend the match with other family members.

Barrett tribute events

The shirt launch coincides with wider celebrations for what would have been Syd Barrett's 80th birthday. A week-long exhibition about his life and work runs at Openspace in Cambridge from 3 to 10 October. The official anniversary event, A Tribute to Syd Barrett, will be held at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on World Mental Health Day itself.

Match day context

The team will wear the unique kit as they look to extend an unbeaten run of five league matches. Their recent form, which includes a league-high 11 goal minutes in the final quarter of matches according to the latest stats, has lifted them to within three points of the League One summit. The visiting Blackpool side currently occupy 15th place in the table. This key fixtures clash will be the first outing for the special shirt.

The Cambridge United Fourth Shirt is available to purchase now from the club's official online store and from the Club Store on Newmarket Road. The club will wear the tribute shirt in their home match against Blackpool on Saturday 10 October.
