Cambridge United's James Brophy Opens Up on U's Exit

Cambridge United's James Brophy has expressed his surprise at not being offered a new deal by the U's after securing promotion from League Two at the end of last season. The 32-year-old midfielder made more than 250 appearances during his time at The Abbey.

What Happened?

Brophy was among eight players released by Cambridge United after the end of last season. He has since signed for Gillingham. When asked about his exit on the eve of the new season, Brophy said, 'It came as a bit of a surprise.' He added, 'I'd made a lot of appearances there. I'd made the place home and my family still lives there, so I was probably a bit surprised.'

Why It Matters for Cambridge United

Brophy also spoke about the ingredients that made Cambridge a force to be reckoned with in League Two last season. They pushed champions Bromley and MK Dons all the way, and only missed out on the title in the final few weeks of the campaign. 'I think it was numerous,' added Brophy. 'The fans only see 90 minutes at the end of the week against another team but we're obviously in every day.'

What Comes Next?

Brophy has plenty of experience and has been in good form, making him a valuable asset to Gillingham. He has already settled in well at his new club and is looking forward to the new season. 'I get a fresh start at a place that I've come to and really enjoyed the last month,' said Brophy. 'Hopefully, I can replicate that success I had last year at a different club.'
