Cambridge United's promotion-winning captain Michael Morrison is leaving the club, ending his 21-year association with the U's. Morrison began his career with Cambridge, coming through the academy and making his debut as a 17-year-old in October 2005. He went on to make 115 appearances before moving to Leicester City, where he won promotion from League One in 2008-09. A spell at Sheffield Wednesday followed before a three-and-a-half season stint with Charlton Athletic, where he again won promotion into the Championship in 2011-12. Morrison had further moves to Birmingham City, Reading and Portsmouth, returning to Cambridge in January 2023. Although relegated with the U's to League Two last season, he featured 17 times this term as the club led the promotion celebrations as their final-day draw against Crewe sealed third spot and a place back in the third tier. Director of football Mark Bonner said: I want to thank Michael Morrison and James Brophy for their considerable contributions, having represented us over 500 times between them. James has been an almost ever present in the team over the past five seasons, and Michael's story in the club from academy player to club captain and lifting the trophy last week was a fitting and well-deserved end. He's been a true servant and proud story in our history. Elias Kachunga is also departing, after making 112 appearances in three seasons, as are Korey Smith, Shayne Lavery, Shane McLoughlin, Ben Purrington and Harry Dawson. The club's transfer activity is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with Bonner looking to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season. Cambridge United's fans will be eager to see who the club brings in to replace the departing players, and how the team will shape up for the new campaign. The U's will be looking to build on their promotion success and make a push for the top of the League One table. With a number of key players leaving, it will be a challenging task, but one that Bonner and his team are relishing. The future of Cambridge United is looking bright, and the club's fans will be excited to see what the new season brings.
